Measurement of beverage ABV by Benchtop NMR Spectroscopy

In collaboration with Dr Dave Ellis and his team at Heriot-Watt University, Scotland, we have demonstrated how our X-Pulse Broadband Benchtop NMR Spectrometer can be used to accurately measure alcohol content in a series of gins. Quantitative proton NMR spectroscopy is used to accurately measure alcohol content, both directly and using a maleic acid internal standard. The method is demonstrated to successfully work not only with gins, but also for sweetened and flavoured beverages with lower alcohol content; and even for ‘alcohol-free’ beverages, clearly measuring the trace alcohol content present.
