Distinguishing Regioisomers in Pharmaceutical Products using Benchtop NMR Spectroscopy

NMR spectroscopy is an incredibly powerful technique for the characterisation and analysis of many chemical compounds. Unlike many other analytical techniques, it is straight-forward to distinguish subtle differences in chemical structures, even distinguishing regioisomers, which differ only by the substitution patterns about an aromatic ring.

Regioisomerisation is common in pharmaceutical compounds, and in this application note we use the X-Pulse Broadband Benchtop NMR Spectrometer, readily distinguish paracetamol and its regioisomers, using one- and two-dimensional proton and carbon- 13 spectroscopy.
